Belle Haven is under the jurisdiction of the Fairfax County Public Schools District, which has won many top honors and accolades. There are three public schools serving Belle Haven: Belle View Elementary School, Carl Sandburg Middle School and West Potomac High School. In addition, many quality private and parochial schools are available in the general Alexandria metro area. There are also a number of universities and colleges near Belle Haven. These include Marymount University in Arlington, George Mason University in Fairfax, Gallaudet University for the deaf, George Washington University, Howard University, Georgetown University and Catholic University, all in Washington, DC.


Every Tuesday at the Sherwood Hall Library, residents gather for the weekly Farmer's Market. Its array of fresh fruits, homemade pies, flowers and veggies offers a little something for everyone. The entire market is put on by local farmers, so everything that is offered is homegrown and often organic. A few particular specialties of the market include handmade crafts, freshly picked beans, and fresh squash and zucchini in the early summer.

Live theatre is a huge part of the local culture in Virginia. Arena Stage in DC, a local theater company, is known for its huge plays that are described as passionate, exuberant and profound in the American Spirit. The Nissan Pavilion is a large outdoor amphitheatre with a 25,000 seat capacity and is the largest in the Washington, DC, metro area. There are also a number of venues in downtown Washington, DC, including the historical Fords Theatre, The Folger Shakespeare Theatre, Warner Theatre and The Smithsonian Theatre, as well as ?little theaters? in Old Town Alexandria and Shirlington in Arlington.

There are also a number of historical sites located in or near Belle Haven. Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, has attracted visitors from around the world for years. This majestic estate is the oldest National Preservation in the country. This phenomenal estate is worth the visit for the sheer beauty of the home and gardens, as well as its historical value. The Smithsonian Museum, one of the largest and most in-depth museums in the country, and the Smithsonian National Zoological Park are both located in Washington, DC.

Parks & Recreation

The Belle View Marina is a wonderful spot for boating and fishing. One of the most popular forms of boating on the marina is sailing, and many residents of Belle View are sailors or sailors in training. The Marina is also a great spot to catch a glimpse of wildlife in the surrounding woodlands, such as deer, raccoons, geese, ducks, jays and bald eagles.

The Belle Haven Country Club is designed to create a 'haven' for its members and their guests. Providing top notch tennis courts, swimming pools, a golf course and a restaurant, the Club is the perfect place for one to relax and unwind. The Club also happens to be filled with a bit of local history. The club once served as a plantation. After the Civil War, the plantation was burnt to the ground by Federal soldiers. In 1924, the land was bought and then turned into the Belle Haven Country Club. The real pride of the Club itself is its 18-hole championship golf course. Constructed by renowned golf course architect, Arthur Hills, this scenic course overlooks the Potomac River.

The Mount Vernon Recreation Center provides residents with the latest sports equipment, fitness classes and work-out techniques. A few particular novelties of the Rec Center include year-round ice skating and ice hockey, a weight room complete with brand new equipment, and an indoor heated pool complete with a sauna. In the summer, the Rec Center is also popular for having a beach area with play features?a definite hot spot for families in the dry months of summer.
